“I Fought For My Life…And Won” – Sohaila Abdulali #mustread #Vaw #Rape. MUST read.
A shamefully patriarchal society like ours has always blamed the victim. Even the sympathies are laden with hints that death is better than a life after Rape. Of course being raped is the worst torture and the most terrible thing to happen. But does that mean that the victim does not deserve a life? Life is worth living, no matter what. And we need to get this straight. Because a girl has been sexually violated, abused, tortured and raped does not imply that she must die rather than live. “It’s better she dies than live after all this!” This statement is heard very often, even in the case of the now dead Delhi gang rape victim . We must be appalled to even suggest that any girl who is a victim, NOT the culprit, must rather die than live. Who are we to deny her a life? In fact, as a civilized society, we must work on ways to make her life better. Because, she DESERVES to live a happy life after all that she has suffered.
They say, change must come from within. I appeal to each one of you who has read this out pour, to begin the change. Next time when you hear anyone suggest that the ‘bechari’ victim of a brutal assault must die rather than face an ashamed life, make sure you make that person feel ashamed of his/her ‘sympathetic’ ideas.
